NPower gift will fund three monitors for More Than One

A HUGE thank you to NPower - their gift of £5,920 has enabled us to buy three vital monitors that helps women with multiple pregnancies to stay mobile during labour, that is just wonderful news in the process of normalising labour!!

On bank holiday weekend, while you are all, no doubt having fun at various BBQs or beer gardens, I will be walking the Cheviot Challenge which involves about 24 miles and 4000ft of climbing through the Cheviot hills in Northumberland.

I have completed training walks in sweltering heat and torrential rain and both ways were flippin' tough, so please picture me suffering on a hillside in the name of charity and give generously!!

I know that we are all counting our pennies at the moment so please give whatever you can - it doesn't matter how much or how little it may be.

I am walking to raise money for the More than One charity which is the multiple birth charity at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Funds raised go towards buying essential equipment and teaching materials needed in the safe delivery of multiple births.

We had our twins, Evie and Robin at the RVI in September 2008 and the support the we received from Sandra, our multiples midwife, was second to none. We were given so much fantastic advice and education on what to expect and how to cope with pregnancy, giving birth to and life with twins. Having twins (or more!) is risky. Chances of complications or premature births is high and life with multiples is tough. It is, of course, also wonderful but for the tough bits, the support that Sandra provides is invaluable.

More than One is a fabulous charity and really made a difference to us so I urge you all to dig deep!

IT’S A FAMILY AFFAIR AS P&G DONATE TO MULTIPLE BIRTHS CHARITY

P&G (Procter & Gamble) has donated £8,000 to a charity close to one of its employee’s hearts.

Ray Murray, who works at P&G’s Seaton Delaval site, is the proud father of two-year-old twin girls and nominated the region’s only charity that celebrates multiple births – More than One – to receive the donation after the charity supported his family during the birth of his baby daughters.

More Than One, based at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Hospital (RVI), was set up in 2007 to bring together families who are expecting, or have had, multiple births. The charity aims to raise awareness of the work of The Women’s Services Directorate at the RVI and raise funds towards purchasing equipment and teaching materials to help with the safe delivery of multiple birth babies.

The money – which was raised by more than 350 of Ray’s colleagues as part of the company’s Community Matters Programme – contributed to buying two double heart monitors and two breast pumps for the charity. Other donations were received from Buckland Trust which donated £2,000 and Terry Mann who donated £5,000 following the arrival of twin grandchildren.

Ray said: “As a father of twins I know firsthand how valuable the expertise is at the RVI. It can be a very daunting time for families but More than One is very supportive and tells you everything you can expect throughout the pregnancy, during labour and even two years later! The network my family has gained at the RVI is invaluable and I hope the donation from P&G leads to the charity supporting more families like they supported us.”

Sandra Bosman, specialist midwife for multiples, founder of More Than One and Mamas and Papas Midwife of the Year 2007, was very grateful for the donation. She said: “We are delighted with P&G’s gift, as a small charity we are always very pleased when someone thinks of us. I started More than One because multiples are often looked at with fear and trepidation – we encourage families to embrace the experience and celebrate being different.”

More than One will be celebrating its 5th annual event at Leazes Park, Newcastle on 4 September.

All, Thank you all so much for donating to the More Than One Charity and

sponsoring me for the Great North Run this year (more did donate but

not all left their e-mail addresses for me to thank them).  You’ll all be glad to know that I did finish the run and managed to complete it in 1hr 54 mins – my target was less than 2 hours so at least that part went well.

Overall the run went well…. to about 10 miles. From 10 miles to 12 miles was pretty difficult ( I thought about stopping every 10 seconds). From 12 miles to the end was the toughest mile I have ever run – I  thought about stopping every 1 second. The best bit about the run was stopping at the end and not having to run again – it was bliss!!!!

I know the charity is so thankful of receiving your hard earned cash - it will be put to good use. Thanks once again for your support. Yours, slightly sore (but desperate to run it again next year).

Ray.

We've raised over £14,000 raised in 2009!

Thank you for your generosity towards the charity event on the 13th September 2009.

We have made £4,858.37 after all outlay and expenses were paid. Lord Mayor David and Margaret Wood have donated the charity £3,291.00 from monies raised during their year in office.

Terry Mann raised £5000 for a golf day he has organised to celebrate his 50th birthday.

Lisbeth & Steven Shooter raised £955 for the charity to celebrate the birth of their babies Isabell & Anna.  Steven did the Great North Run. Rather energetic I thought!!

I am waiting for Northern Rock for a fundraiser match so hopefully that will bring the total up.  So far the amount then is £14103.37 plus Northern Rocks contribution which we are waiting to had to the final amount.

What have we done with the money so far I hear you ask??

Climbing frame in Antenatal Clinic waiting room has been purchased.

Books and breast pumps have been bought.

A monitor has been purchase for the use in the Ante natal ward to monitor babies.

A television/projector has been ordered for the use in the parent education room.

More monitors were suggested and money has been kept aside for furnishing a second bereavement room on Delivery Suite.

Yet again, an enormous thanks to you for your support over the last 2 years.  The next date is set for the 12th September 2010.  Hope you will be part of it again.

Best wishes
